Surfing With Kids
A practical look at surfing Waikīkī with kids, grounded in Waikīkī reef, trade winds and a real day with the SFC crew.

Is your child ready to surf?
Kids do beautifully in Waikīkī’s gentle water, and many stand up faster than their parents. Readiness is less about age than about comfort in moving water and the ability to follow one instruction at a time.
- Comfort in water they can’t stand in matters more than swim medals — but a child should be at ease getting splashed and going under briefly.
- Attention span: a child who can follow a coach for a few minutes at a time will progress and stay safer.
- Private or family lessons suit young kids best — one instructor, one or two children, and a pace set by them.
- Parents can watch from the beach or, in a family lesson, join in the water.
Tip: Tell SFC your child’s age and how they feel about deep water when you book — it shapes the lesson.

How SFC runs a kids’ lesson
Boards and rash guards are sized down for smaller surfers, the instructor stays within arm’s reach in the whitewater, and the tone stays playful. The goal of a first kids’ lesson is a few standing rides and a kid who wants to come back — not a workout.
