Waikīkī surf guide
Walk from Waikīkī sand into your first wave
Picture your first session from the harbor meeting point to beach practice and coached attempts in the water.

What actually happens, start to finish
A first lesson follows the same arc whether you book open group, private or a private group. Here’s how the morning goes, so nothing catches you off guard.
- Check in at Ala Wai Boat Harbor inside Ala Wai Boat Harbor and meet your instructor.
- Beach talk: ocean safety, how the board works, and the day’s conditions.
- Pop-up practice on dry sand — you’ll rehearse the movement several times before you touch water.
- Paddle out to a beginner zone at Bowls, Kaisers or Rock Piles with your instructor beside you.
- Catch whitewater: the instructor pushes you into gentle broken waves so you can practice standing.
- Ride toward the beach, paddle back, repeat — most first-timers stand up on their first session.
- Photos and a debrief on the sand before you head back to the harbor.

How to make your first ride easier
You don’t need to be strong or athletic — you need to relax and follow one cue at a time. Keep your eyes on the beach, not your feet; the board follows your gaze. Pop up in one motion instead of climbing to your knees. And expect to fall a lot early on: falling is how the pop-up gets automatic.
