Threes (3s): Waikīkī’s offshore right
A defined right on the offshore Waikīkī reef, east of Fours and west of Paradise. Its character changes with the swell, from smaller longboard waves to faster sections.
Find the right reef, not just the beach
Threes, often written 3s, is an offshore Waikīkī reef break between Fours to the west and Paradise to the east. The State of Hawaiʻi’s coastal study labels these as separate surf areas. Our aerial map uses that reference to keep the closely spaced names attached to their own reefs.
From a beachfront view, the offshore lineups can seem to blend together. Use the north-up aerial to understand their relationship, then look at the specific Threes footage. Notice how far the named reef lies from the beachfront and how close it sits to its neighbors. That wider view helps make sense of a distant lineup.
Understand the appeal of the right
Hawaiian South Shore describes Threes as a right that can suit longboarding in smaller surf and become faster and more demanding when the swell builds. A right runs toward the rider’s right while facing shore. This direction is useful to recognize before trying to interpret a view filmed from land.
The important part is how the wave changes through a ride. A surfer may need to build speed, hold a line or adjust to a steeper section. Those decisions depend on the wave in front of them. A familiar break name cannot guarantee the same shape on a different day.
Study a clearly identified smaller session
Where’s Your Board titles the film above “Surfing Threes Waikiki | 2-3 and Clean” and identifies a south-swell session in the description. Treat that size wording as the filmmaker’s description of the recorded day. It is not a forecast or a universal scale for judging conditions from your hotel.
Follow one rider from the first paddle strokes through the end of the wave. Watch for the line to the right and the adjustments that keep the board ahead of the breaking section. Then consider the waiting surfers: where people sit and how they leave room are part of understanding any shared lineup.
Match the outing to your current ability
Being inspired by a smooth ride is a good starting point for a coaching goal. Describe the part you want to learn, whether that is an earlier turn, steadier trim or better wave selection. Tell the instructor what you can already do independently, especially controlling the board around other people.
An offshore session also requires enough energy for paddling and returning. Discuss your recent experience and comfort before selecting water. SFC’s teaching location is chosen for the session, and the booking confirmation supplies the meeting instructions. Use Threes as a reference for the coastline and the skills you would like to develop.
