Populars (Pops): longboarding offshore
Populars, usually called Pops, is farther offshore and west of Canoes. Watch longboarding at this distinct reef break, then compare its position with central Waikīkī.
Learn the name and its offshore position
Populars is commonly shortened to Pops. On the official Waikīkī coastal study map it sits east of Paradise, farther offshore and west of Canoes. This is a separate break from Publics, which is toward the Kapiʻolani Park side of the surf area. Similar names can send a visitor to the wrong video.
The real aerial in our guide makes that distinction visible. Find Pops first, then compare its distance from the beachfront with Canoes. The photograph helps you understand the setting, while the numbered marker identifies an approximate reef area rather than a fixed takeoff spot or suggested route through the water.
See why longboarders look at Pops
Hawaiian South Shore describes a longer right and a shorter, softer left at Pops, with room for different boards depending on the conditions. Wave shape changes with the swell and tide, so the useful question is how a rider manages the face available on a particular wave.
Michael Baas’s film above explicitly names Pops in both its title and description. It offers a recorded look at longboarding at this break. Watch for the paddle into the wave, the moment the board settles into its line and the rider’s adjustments as the shoulder changes. Those details reveal more than board length alone.
Give the paddle a place in the plan
Pops is an offshore outing, and local surf guidance emphasizes the longer paddle. Reaching the lineup is only part of the effort. Time spent waiting, repositioning and catching waves still leaves a return trip to complete. Assess that whole session when deciding whether it matches your fitness and recent ocean experience.
A relaxed-looking ride does not show everything happening around it. Watch how surfers use the peak and where rides travel before joining any lineup. Independent paddling, board control and awareness of someone already riding are useful skills to discuss with a coach, especially if you have mainly practiced in shallow inside water.
Keep the learning goal specific
Someone drawn to Pops may want a longer ride, better longboard trim or a clearer sense of Waikīkī’s different peaks. Pick the goal that matters most and explain what you have already practiced. A coach can use that information to choose an exercise and suitable teaching water for the actual day.
An SFC reservation does not select Pops as a guaranteed destination. Use the meeting details in your latest confirmation and tell the crew about your ability before entering the water. You can use the Pops film to study longboarding while building the paddling, turning and stopping skills that support progress across different conditions.
