Find it beside the harbor

Ala Moana Bowls sits beside the Ala Wai Boat Harbor entrance, at the western end of the cluster shown on our South Shore map. It is a named surf break offshore, rather than another name for Ala Moana Beach Park or the whole harbor-side surfing area.

That distinction helps when you are looking from shore. Several separate peaks can be breaking within the same view. The wave someone points to as Bowls may have a very different shape and pace from the water closer to the beach.

Why the wave gets attention

Bowls is known for a fast, hollow left over reef. On a lined-up swell, the steep pocket gives experienced surfers room for powerful turns and tube riding. The same characteristics demand quick decisions and reliable control of the board.

The Ho & Pringle Productions clip above is a useful look at that performance side of the break. Watch the starting position before each ride, then follow the surfer through the steepest part of the wave. An accomplished rider can make a demanding section look surprisingly relaxed.

What the footage cannot tell you

An edited session shows selected waves on a particular day. It does not show every wait, current, missed wave or change in the crowd. A camera angle can also make the distance from shore and the water above the reef difficult to judge.

Use the clip to recognize the wave’s character. For a real session, the useful questions are about the conditions now, the ability of the surfer, and the room available. A small forecast number does not answer all three.

How this fits your SFC lesson

SFC meets near Ala Wai Boat Harbor and chooses teaching water for the people and conditions present. Booking a lesson does not reserve the famous outside peak shown in a surf film. Tell the crew whether you are learning to stand, returning after a long break, or working on a specific skill.

Use your latest booking confirmation for the meeting instructions. If you are mainly interested in seeing Bowls, enjoy the footage first and ask the crew about what you can observe that day. Keep the lesson decision tied to your experience and goals.
