Queens: watch Waikīkī longboarding up close
A celebrated longboard wave in central Waikīkī. Watch experienced riders trim, cross-step and work with the wave’s changing shape.
A wave with a longboard following
Queens sits in central Waikīkī near the Duke Kahanamoku statue area, east of Canoes. It is celebrated for a shaped right that draws skilled longboarders. Hawaiian South Shore’s local guide describes it as a center of traditional logging.
The wave is part of a living surf community, including competitions and everyday sessions. T&C’s 2023 event account describes young surfers competing at Queens and a separate inside division at Baby Queens. That distinction is useful for a visitor learning the names.
See what the riders are doing
The sunset film by Nyzjon Jefferson is identified as Queens by NobodySurf. It features Kaniela Stewart, John Michael Van Hohenstein and Nique Miller. Use it to watch how accomplished longboarders adjust speed and position along the wave.
Try following a single rider’s feet and board before looking at the scenery. Moving forward or back changes how the board responds. A stylish walk toward the nose is supported by timing and control; copying the final movement without that setup misses much of the skill.
Understand the inside and outside distinction
The main wave and the inside reform called Baby Queens are different sections. A clip of one cannot describe the other, and an attractive view of the whole beach does not identify the most suitable learning water.
Ask someone who is assessing the beach that day to explain which section they mean. That is especially helpful when a friend uses the word Queens loosely for a wider area. Always connect a place name with the actual wave, people and conditions in front of you.
Bring respect and an honest skill assessment
Watch the lineup before joining it. Notice where rides begin, where they travel and how waiting surfers leave space for someone already moving. For someone still learning to direct or stop a board, those demands may be more challenging than the wave’s size suggests.
An SFC lesson begins with your ability and goals. Tell the crew if the footage has inspired you to improve longboard control, but leave the teaching location to the instructor. You can enjoy Queens as a spectator and still learn in water chosen specifically for your session.
